Cusco or “Qosqo” which means “Navel” in Quechua, is the ancient capital city of the Incan territory called “Tawaintisuyu” or Four Regions of the Sun. The city was founded by Manco Q´apaq and then, reformed by the Inca Pachacuteq who gave it the shape of a puma. In 1535, Qosqo was taken by the Spaniards with the help of natives and African slaves and was once again founded by the invaders and called Cuzco. Today, Cusco is recognized by the UNESCO as Historical Patrimony of Humanity, Peru´s Historical Capital City and this year, it was named American Capital City of Culture.
